Hospice- No end to caring

Hospice fun walk

_
Description of the project
Hospice is a non-governmental organisation that cares for the terminally ill, this includes cancer patients, the HIV/AIDS infected etc. This organisation will not only consider the type of illness but it will also consider different ways of improving the lives of those who are ill. This being said, hospice's like most organisations of this sort need funding to help them help others. this is why events such as the hospice fun walk are put together. The hospice fun walk is an annual event which first staged in May 2003, hosted by Hospice Witwatersrand. Therefore the fun walk initiative is aimed at raising funds to improve the lives of people, supported by organisations such as Liberty Health. Subsequently in the other hand Spar will be sponsoring this event which will take place on the 6th March 2011 at the Zoo Lake. Therefore various tickets will be sold to the community along with their dogs, for a distance of 4km, 8km or 12 km walks. The money raised will go towards the professional palliative care programmes of Hospice to ensure maximum comfort for all patients, they also help all ages.

Why is it considered a development project?
With considering the above project it is development project because all the money or funds raised from this event goes directly in campaigns that ensures that terminally ill patients who cannot afford health care will be taken care of. This is why guidance and support is offered in improving the lives of these people in the most crucial moments. Therefore as a non-governmental project (organisation that is not state controlled) it aims at bringing positive change to the community and its people. The main priority of this project is to consider interests of people and developing a strategy to achieve its goals. In relation to the previous statements this project can be considered as a development project, whereby the project helps to generate funds for the terminally ill, while also supporting healthy life style for community members. Therefore this is why members are encouraged to get involved physically in the campaign this could help them develop healthy lifestyles as they engage in walking. The hospice fund raising project creates healthy and improved livelihoods within the community, which results in development with potential/positive change to the society.

What development theory underpins this project?

The development theory that underpins this project is Neo-liberalism because the main actor is the private sector, Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals. The state's involvement is regarded as detrimental to development and NGOs are regarded as the solution to development issues. Therefore the communication network facilitates NGOs communication with community organisation. This is normally seen when the public society/community works hand in hand with NGOs. Such initiatives are normally free from state intervention or control, which therefore it is believed that the market will solve the problem of scarcity by means of Supply and demand. The present study compared Turkish university student and middle-aged adults development theorise about the perceived importance of needs related to different
life tasks and functionally of relationship with parents, same-sex siblings and friends for need satisfaction
during childhood, adolescence and youth ,a retrospective method was used. The following result emerged :1 the important of needs related to search for identity and intimacy increased and the importance of those related to dependency decreased from childhood
to adolescence : need related to intimacy maintained a high level of importance during youth whereas importance of the need for self-understand/ development decrease.
This project is based on a neo liberalism practise whereby public sector and the private sector, and civilians combine resources to deliver the best services to the society. The Hospice fund-raising project symbolises partnership between society and private sector creating an environment to encourage individuals to uplift themselves. Although this is regarded as a non-governmental organisation, the government also contributes to ensure that people who are involved in this development project are safe during their fund-raising or during the marathon. Therefore this is a neo-liberal development project as this project encourages a self-reliant community, that strives to create an environment that underprivileged individuals to uplift themselves, an environment were there is easy access to health facilities. Private sector encourages individuals to get involved so that individuals could be able to uplift themselves.
How does the youth and children benefit from this project?

Advantages

This project will benefit children as it will create an environment where children can be able to access resources at their best level. Therefore Children will gain exposure to being able to participate in the socio-economic to in encouraging youth into self-reliant individuals. The youth and children will benefit from this theory because the state does not consider the basic needs of the youth but it considers how profit can be made. NGOs deal with personal lives of people and understands what the needs of people are.Children and the youth are worth studying because they are the future of tomorrow and through this theory their opinions and how they see society will be understood and they will feel welcomed and wanted by the society. This will give them enthusiasm to want to make a change and contribute to the development of society. This project ensures that children and the youth will make a positive change to society by raising money. The state does not always do enough and this will empower the youth to be true leaders. The youth can also learn from this project that in life we cannot depend on people but we need to be responsible for our own lives. This will help them to develop their own lives.
In terms of this theory the children are going to benefit in terms of profits and will be able to participate in the labour markets, they will benefit in education, health and public security and the youth and children will be prevented from crime and violence. This project will benefit both children and the youth in particular. children will participate in the programmes that
are offered by the hospice, this programmes help them in terms of their fitness, mental and social well-being. This project will help them with their health problems and will ensure that they are kicked from the streets and that they will do something worthwhile.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages are that these resources cannot be ready available to all members within a society. Hence these kinds of projects cause a problem as they might be relatively expensive for low income earners.the private sector can result in a long term disadvantage as it is concerned more in profit making and not considering the basic needs of the ill people.
the emergence of sexual abuse and exploitation discourse to describe youth involvement in the sex trade, the age, female prostitutes have been subjected to discriminatory legislation and unequal law, youth children involved in prostitution and the children involve in sexual abuse. the youth involve industry earn less money and they work long hours..an disadvantage may be one,
that of which that the children cannot get the services that they require immediately because the programme is not well by the government.NGOs do not have enough money to ensure that the basic needs of people are met. If money runs out, children and the youth will be left with no hope. They will turn back to their old lives and probably will not be motivated to make change again.

After reading this development project i would like to suggest Non-Governmental Organizations as a theme for this project, because hospice`s main aim is focused at caring for the ill instead of making a profit.
