THE NAME OF THE PROJECT

Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET)

ABET

DISCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Adult basic education and training is the general conceptual foundation towards life long learning and development, comprising of knowledge, skills and attitudes required for social, economic and political participation and transformation applicable to a range of contexts. It focuses on giving people a chance to study regardless of age. It is one of our most basic fundamental right to have access to education. ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) is available to adults who want to obtain a level of basic education.
ABET is an organization that was established to address the issue of illiteracy amongst adults in South Africa. It aims to develop knowledge and necessary skills required to ensure social, economic and political participation. ABET familiarizes adults with the concept of education and offers a variety of recognized certificates. This helps to develop the skills level of previously disadvantaged South Africans who never had the opportunity to go to school.

THEORY UNDERPINNED

The project is focussed on Grassroots development because it seeks to improve the lives of those who were previously disavantaged in terms of education. The project targets especially women as it also focuses on giving women a voice - hence, women impowerment. It moves towards greater equity by focusing on grassroots development through participation.
The level of the Project is micro-level which is micro theory (participatory development). This project is considered as development because it attempts to improve adult' s computer skills, in today' s modern technologically based approaches. Computer litteracy is one of the most significant knowledge a person can have. This picture can be a big motivation to all other adults who still would like to improve their computer knowledge or skills. It will also give adults the opportunity to be employed by potential employers, thus decrease the rate of unemployment in South Africa by participating in the country's work force and improving the skills level in South Africa. The rate of poverty in South Africa will also decrease because individuals would be able to afford basic needs thus contributing to the economy. When looking at South Africa as a whole, there is a lack of skills when it comes to electronic systems like computers. The involvement of women in basic education training will result in more women empowerment and an increase in skills in many fields such as the workplace, acces to community involvement, participating in descision making, and even political involvement. It helps them to understand how to use computer based skills and create better chances of being employeed in any occupational environment. The center of intervention in this development project are people living in the Third World countries. Thus, we may also say that this form of development follows a Keynesianism development theory because there is state intervention to help regions and groups of disadvantaged people. There is also a strong emphasis on women empowerment in the immediate community because in society, women are more disadvantaged than men in quite a number of ways.

IMPLICATIONS ON CHILREN AND YOUTH: ADVANTAGE AND DISDAVANTAGES
Children and the youth will benefit from this project because their parents would be able to afford them a basic standard of living. This type of project is mostly focussed on individuals from low class communities whose circumstances might be improved through training. In terms of a basic standard of living, children will receive food on a daily basis unlike under their normal circumstances, proper housing conditions and sanitation will be improved. All these factors contribute to children's well being and stability. Above all, parents would be able to afford education for their children. When parents are educated, they will be better off taking care of their children because they are better equipped with valuable knowledge which would aid in the survival of their children. With parents earning an income, there is less pressure placed on children to enter the work force at an early age. By so doing, parents save their children a lot of hassle and possible exploitation by employers who have the tendency to underpay young people for their labour. On the other hand however, there are also minor disdvantages. Sometimes, the work that parents obtain through these skills might be far away. Location plays an important role because it also determines how much time parents get to spend with their children. Dedicating time for family is an important aspect as it assists in the development of the child. Another vital element that needs to be taken into consideration is the possible charge of domestic responsibility that will be given to the child. Because parents/caregivers often enter full-time, rather than part-time employment in order to maximise their income, children who return home from school before their parents would be assigned household maintenance tasks. This can have an effect on children and youth as household work is time consuming and requires significant effort. This often leaves them feeling tired at the end of the day and greatly interferes with their school work. Research has proven that children who work (either in the household setting or outside the household, paid or unpaid), are most likely to perfom worse academically than their counterparts who don't work.

Theory underpinning ABET The theory underpinning this project is the Modernisation Theory, this is because adults are being taught how to use computers and not necessarily just books.
This proves modernization as it directly deals with technology and is not how schools were taught when they were still growing up.
Now adults who never had the opportunity to participte in econic development.

Our development project which is Adult basic Education Training (ABET) are the key actors and this is a grassroots development theory. The people involved
in this project are the community people and that empowers individuals. This project it is establish to improve necessary skills and knowledge.By doing this it
led to some rethinking of developing in terms of improving the standards and quality of life. This projects is an approach that is known as the Basic Needs Approach
(BNA).The ABET project is associated in a particular with the growth on non-governmental organizations (NGOs).The NGOs provide services that are much more
appropriate to the local communities. The grassroots development theory involves people around the community and our project is doing that.

Adult Basic Education and Training(ABET) is a programme that was established to empower the skills of people in South Africa. It is a great opportunity for people who did not get a chance to go to school especailly older people. This training will help indivisuals in this programme to be employed and some will also be creative and start their own businesses plus it will decrease the rate of unemployment in South Africa. It can fall under Development theory because it will develop the economy and the skills of people in South Africa and make it grow or improve, thcere will be more employment and less crime. It falls under modernization theory because it helps the adults in this training with technology advancement and it also can be under the Basic Needs Approach as it helps with the skills development it will also help them with getting a job and being able to buy and afford basic needs for instance food, clothes, water, security and health services.

The Adult Basic Education and Training organisation is an organisation that underpins many theories like the Keynesianism and the Modernisation theories to name a few.It underpins the Keynesianism theory because the state or the government works with the organisation to help the disadvantaged people in different regions on their literacy skills. The Modernisation theory is also illustrated in this organisation, because computers are of modern technology and that is what these adults are tought. Also the Basic Needs Approach is used because literacy is a basic need that people have to have in order to survive in these modern times.

ABET falls under the Grassroots development.

From 1970 it has been paying attention to bottom-up development.
Non-governmental organizations have become key actors in the grassroots approach, NGOs are often thought to be highly participatory and contribute to
empowerment, Civil society groups like NGOs are regarded as being important in the move towards greater democracy through out the world.
One of the key routes through which empowerment is meant to be achieved is through participation. Grassroots development is often termed participatory,
this means participation and envolvment of local people in development activities.
Participation can take place in a number of wats and at different stages in the setting up of development projects (willis, 2005).
this quotation proves that ABET falls under Grassroots development

The theory that underpins this project is the grassroot development because it focuses on developing adult education and skills which is for those who where
previously underdeveloped due to opressive ruling .It also involves things such as the NGOs that participate also in develping adult by opening learnership and finding
them employment to eliminate poverty and increase economic growth.

ABET (Adult basic education and training) is the general foundation working towards a life long learning and development, skills, and a change applicable to a range of contexts. ABET is flexible and provides access to nationally recognised certifate documents. With an estimation of 3.3 million illiterate adults in South Africa the Department of Education website aims to provide information on the programme- information for people interested in being involved with the programme, either as learners or educators.
The concept is uniquely South African. In western countries ABE stands for Adult basic education. South Africa then added the T, for training in the policy initiatives of the early 1990s. The reason for adoption the term fell into two main groups.

  • One of the deepest percptions of education in South Africa, especially on the part of labour unions and business, was that education had little application in life and work while training meant drilling in routine jobs with no attention to underlying knowledge and work. Adding the T showed a commitent to the integration of education and training into ABET.

  • ABET's adoption rather than adult literacy work was a result of political struggle informed by resaerch. In spite of fine achievements of adult literacy work in the struggle, literacy alone was not considered adequate to support real social transformation. ABET was meant to offer an appropriately adult route to a genral education aimed at making a significant improvement in quality of life.

201109324 The main aim for ABET is simply improve the level of illiteracy of South African adults and eliminate the rate of unemployment caused by lack of skills since we all know that most of South African adults are illiterate because the could not get proper schooling during their times. It gives alot of adulrs a second chance to do something with their future, in this way unemployed single parents can have a go in enhancing their future. Much empasis is on women empowerment, which is associeted witch grassroots development. The ABET project will benefit both the economy and the country's development index. Its simply a nice way used to decrese poverty in our country, poverty which is due to fustrated individuals who cannot get jobs. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ABET – Adult Based Education and Training. In many of our communities we find that adults have very little or educational background at all. With ABET, they are able to go back to school and get educated and create endless opportunities for themselves.
They can now contribute t the economy and lead as examples for the youth. The youth can now value and take education a lot more seriously as they see what doors it has opened for their parents.
Abet has a number of certificates and offers computer skills so that even when the adults are qualified they also qualify in a technological perspective also. In this way the illiteracy and drop-out rates can decline drastically.
The only disadvantage is that even if u learn and acquire a certificate, it does not guarantee a job.

Adult Basic Education and Traing, deals with the development of adult, who are previleged. Whereas grassroots development on human development, focus on the people, and giving them training, which will help them acquire neccessary skills. The main reason for this theory is that, Adult Basic Education and Training, offers education, training to people. Its also provides them the opportunity to empower themselves as people, as an adult. Its a development project, because its allows, and offers adult the opportunity to have computer literacy skills, whereas this skill will enable them to be able to work with computers.
Adult Basic Education and Training, is not only an previlage for udults, but for government. By doing and taking part of this project the adult will only be the ones who will benefit to this project, and they will be able to use these skills. This theory, mainly focuses on the people, and on human development, where they provide the community, including individuals, the neccessary needs, to improve the quality of life.

BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE ABET ORGANISATION ON CHILDREN

The Adult Education and Training organisation just likeany other organisation has benefits and disadvantages on the people around it, it can be on adults or children. The organisation as stated earlier is an organisation that aims to improve adults computer skills, this initiative is a positive one but it has it's disadvanges.
The benefits of this organisation on children are that children they can have literate parents who will work for them in high industries, because these days you have to be computer literate or have a very high quality in order to qualify in certain jobs.Children will be able to go to schools and get what they want because their parents will have better jobs because of their computer literacy. Some children have parents who are iliterate and dont know anything about computers, then children get researches on computers which some of them dont know how to use it but if they are computer literate they can help their children with their home works.
The disadvantages can be that parents may spend a lot of time learning how to use computer and miss out on other important things like home chores, getting their children ready for school this applies to women. When this happens children feel they are not loved then they resort to bad habbits like drugs, unplannend pregnancy and even sexully transmitted deseases because they know that their parents are not there to tell them how to behave. When parents are not arounda lot of the time in their children's lifethey grow up with bad thoughts in their minds and then start doing crime and all sorts of bad things.
Some children or youth can think that they are disadvantaged because they dont recieve opportunities like the one the ABET organisation provides that often.

Benefits and disadvantages of ABET on Childern and Youth

ABET benefits children and the youth not to work anymore at a young age and actually go to school while their parents make use of the ABET and obtain computer skills for the to be able to get a job and feed their families, plus they will be able to give their children a chance to education and empower themselves also to a better future. Plus this will benefit children and youth parents not to continue making more babies cause they will be busy and not have time to do other staff.
The disadvantage is that parents may be busy and neglect their families and that would cause tension on theur reletionship.

ABET WILL BENEFIT CHILDREN AND YOUTH.
This project will benefit children and youth, because those whose needs were recognised as particularly acute included women and children. Under the assumption that women’s main role was the care of children were the responsibility of their mothers. Children were particularly attractive to NGOs, as the fact that they are perceived as political finds favour with both funders and host governments. A needs based approach to development for the first time focused the thoughts of development practitioners on the specific situation and needs of children. It was recognised that children have interests that tare distinct from adult. Most of the youth this days can not finish school due to some certain difficulties therefore is the best chance for them to enrol in the ABET school for the benefif of their knowledge and skills.

The implications of ABET on the children and the youth!

It is very common to find in a household that the parents or older guardians in most cases have little educational
back ground and are clueless when it comes to computers, this may be due to the time in which they grew up in and the lack of resources,
opportunites they incounterd. The advantage of ABET is that it closes the gab between parents and their children when it comes to basic
education and being able to make use of electronic devices. Parents/guardians are able to be more hands on in assisting their children
when it comes to school work because thanks to ABET they know a thing or two, this becomes a great motivation and hope for the children
knowing that they can count on their parents to give them a hand now and again. Moreover children can concentrate on school work and not
have to worry about finding means to help their househols because their parents/gaurdians would have a nationally recognised certificate from ABET
that would enable them to find a job that would help in taking care of the finances of the home. The issue of lack would be delt with in this would create
a stress free atmosphere in the home, meaning the family could spend more time on the things that matter the most, loving and caring for each other
and this would be a definite advantage to the child, it would result in the child having a positive outlook to life and possibly acheive great things.ABET help many children and youth for those their parents are going to ABET they are able to help their children for their homeworks.Parents who are going to ABET they know many things and have information about the things that are not good for their children so that they can protect them from those bad things that us now we are doing as children and youth and lie to our parents, ABET is a good thing that help our parents especially children and youth.

The implications of ABET on the youth

The ABET helps adults which did not have a chance to study or have qualifications to be employed and this has a positive impact in their lives in terms of finances. Parents which were once poor can be able to provide for their families, that way parents can also for instance teach their children how to use a computer then the level of
iliteracy will decrease gradually. The introduction of the ABET can influence individuals to venture into making internet cafe's within their communities whereby
they can help individuals who need help with computer skills and on the other hannd making money for themselves , this can happen simultaneously.
The introduction of ABET can also give a second chance to the youth which did not have a chance to study due to poverty.
In short the ABET have many advantages which will enhance the future of the youth and people of south africa.South africa is one of many countries which lack individuals who are skilled and developed .
This implementation of the ABET programmme will decrease such problems within the economy by providing employement whether it be at small, medium or large firms.

adult basic education training(ABET)

Its develpoment because it helps develop adults as individuals helping them learn more and enabling them to be more educated with the modern technology
it also gives them oppertunity to prosper and empower themselves.

the grassroot development theory underpins this topic perfect because they both deal with develpoment issuse and is there to help develop human development and
which the ABET is dealing with for adults.

this is a good impact for the youth and children because their parents will be educated and this will put a good impression for children it also will
be easier for the youth to communicate with adults through modern technology because they will be able to understand i regard the ABET a good impact on the
youth of today.

ABET

Advanteges and disadvantages of ABET

Advantages

The ABET might decrease poverty amongst South African adults. It helps those who did not have a chance to study during
their times a chance to do someting with their lives. The issue of unemployment might come to rest if more people are working.
.If more people work the economy will be boosted gradually. The ABET programme assists in developing our country because
the level of education does affect the development index.

Disadvantages

Serverly disadvantaged people might not have enough money to pay for their funds. As for some older people it might be difficult
for some to take oders from young people which may cause dropouts. The quality of qualifications offered to the students may mean
they have to work in places which they might not like or recieve lesser salary compared to those who got their qualifications in
universities which might cause conflict.

the ABET has impact on children and youth because it focuses only on adult people not on children and youth. But i dont see any problem because children and youth have their schools that suite them but many of them they dont want to go to school they want to stay at home and do bad things like committing crime and do the works that dosen't suite them, that will damage their life's.
