DEVELOPMENT THEORY PROJECT: GROUP 35

tembisa police station development

Description

The above insert is a picture of a construction site in a rural area (presumably a hospital), which will assist the community and benefit the people in it.

Why is this development?

The construction of a hospital in a rural area can be seen as development as the land is being used to benefit the people living on it.
The existence of a hospital with in the area ensures accessibility to health care to members of that area.
This might help reduce infant mortality rate or even the general death rate in the area and surrounding areas.
Consequently life expectancy will increase. The hospital also has economical benefits to the area, as it will offer new and more job opportunities, thus
bringing more income to households of that area.

What development theory underpins this project?

Post-development theory: Basic needs approach.
The basic needs of the members of the societies are being met when a hospital is built in the area.
Not only do they get health services, but when something as big as a hospital is built in a rural area, services such as electricity, telephone and water are
introduced to the area and the locals also get to benefit from it.

How does this project impact on children/youth?

The above project will have a significant impact on the children and youth of the community, because more then any sector of the population they are the ones
most in need of health care, as they are more prone to illnesses, especially malnutrition of which Africa is notorious for. So the children will be protected
from desease and thus ensure longer healthier lives. The building of a hospital will especially help the youth with challenges faced concerning the HIV/AIDS
pandemic of which the youth is largely faced with. At hospitals they will get the medical attention and they seek and more information on the virus. Knowledge
of it might reduce the infection rate of HIV and other transmittable diseases.

GROUP 35'S DEVELOPMENT THEORY PROJECT...
The picture of developmet:
Computers installed at Muyexe E-RAP Center, KZN
Description of the development project:

Development is very important because it simply makes a country upgrade, in this project we will be focusing on developing techonogical equipments and educating young people and their
parents so that they can be able to use these technical things. We need to know how to use technology or rather be able to access it so that we can be able to work in technical jobs. This will
enhance young people and they will be able to get jobs. This theory of development is however very important.

What theory of development underpins this project:

Post development theory: basic needs approach.
Technology is very important that is why it is considered to be a basic need. If job creation is to be made and young people are to be imployed then they need to be cluded with technology. In
1999 technology started to become very important and very difficult, many people needed to even travel all over the world just to get knowlegde about the technical staff and this caused them
alot of money but if we can develop computers for these underdeveloped countries than many people will get the education they need and not have to move or travel.

Why is this development?

It is development because it opens new opportunites for young people and it develops the jobs situated in rural areas. It develops the youth's experiences and they can be able to get any job
they want because of the knowledge. This is development because it does not only give opportunities to people but it also creates a spirit of unism and ambitousness amoung the youth.
This will enable learners the ability to complete their assessments more conveniently with the necessary resources supplied as well.

Description of the development project: An information Culture is a pre-requisite for an awareness economy where the age band and the manipulation of knowledge play a crucial role in the generation and distribution of sustainable growth. The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform's comprehensive rural development programme seeks to create sustainable, equitable and viable rural communities and it has identified effective deployment of ICT infrastructure as one of the key interventions for developing rural communities. This led to the implementation of the e-Rural Access Programme (e-RAP) which is one of the programmes within DRDLR. It addresses key aspects of the information society and rural development. Children are well equiped and are technologically enabled through the use of this programme. The use of the internet has become a very essential necessity in our modern day everyday life, hence the development programme being one of the best to be implemented.

Description of the development project:
this project focuses on urbanising thwe rural areas, hence stabilising the growth of the country's economy because less people will have to migrate to the cities in search for the favourable conditions. this kind of project will bring life
bettering facilities to the people living in rural areas that is, shoping malls, well structured clinics, proper schools and parks for the children. It also involves the construction of proper roads and will bring employment to the youth.
since the state is the main actor that distribute resources and use, and because this development will lead to economic growth. I therefore classify this projet as classical marxism

Why is this a Development Project: The e-Rural Access Programme's goal is to accelerate socio-economic development in rural South Africa through the innovative use of Information Communication Technology (ICT); to make online resources, information and services a reality to rural communities and to promote knowledge-based economies in rural South Africa. Furthermore e-Rural Access Programme's purpose is to improve the quality and efficiency of front-line government service delivery and contribute towards increasing public participation in rural development by driving ICTs within rural South African communities. The e-Rural Access Programme's will position itself as one of the key projects initiated to ensure that the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform's goals become a reality.
This way, the youth is able to have access to technological facilities as well the use of the internet for school based tasks, hence working to their adantage.

What Development Theory underpins this Project? The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform seeks to directly assist the emergence of a competitive economy by providing internet access, development of knowledge economy skills, catalysing the formation of online communities, and knowledge economy which is the economic component of e-society where the generation and the exploitation of knowledge play a predominant part in the creation of wealth

grassroots development

This theory focus on basic need, eg shelter. Without a house we can not survive, grassroots is mainly focusing on primary needs for human. It relate to youth and development in terms of providing rights for children, to avoid abuse at home. grassroots theory it involves social support, self expression and mutual helping, it brings positive change to society enabling citizen to participate in democracy. such development help maintain sociatal cohesion, and providing help to the needy population in terms of disasters. It stimulate volunteering in economic system, philanthropic giving. Cumutatively, grassroots associations have a very substantial effect on society and on the lives of its citizens, especially in modern nations like America. Rural development illustrated in the picture show primary needs being met as they are building hopitals and police station in the rural area.

What is youth development, well it can be described as :

"...the ongoing growth process in which all youth are engaged in attempting to (1) meet their basic personal and social needs to be safe, feel cared for, be valued, be useful, and be spiritually grounded, and (2) to build skills and competencies that allow them to function and contribute in their daily lives."
(Pittman, 1993, p. 8)
The development of the rural area can ensure this through a combination of people, places, support , opportunities and services. A safe community is created where in children and youth can live in, get an education and learn new skills. There are a few well-known factors that contribute to the positive outcomes of the youth development of young children's lives. Rural development is just one . Building new schools, medical facilities, culture centre, safe playing areas etc. These new centres create new job oppurtunity for the working parents of these children and this generates an income. The income provides money to go to school, pay for food or any other activities that ensure a better and healthy life for the children and youth of this community. At school they can get an education an learn new skills that will only benefit them on the long run.The children and youth also have a chance now to participate in sport and cultural activities. This will develop them in positive ways. Developing the rural area also creates an safe environment for the children to live in. So looking at the bigger picture we can say that rural development is the best for the children and youth of today.

Martin N
200928712

Rural development as a whole is a positive thing that is extremely beneficial to children and the youth. Firstly, when a young person is being brought up in a safe and secure home, they are able to study better, thus ensuring them a better future. Decent shelter has also been proven to reduce the rate of physical and emotional child abuse therefore directly lessening the high number of children who run away from their homes to live on the streets. When a rural area is being developed, critical structures such as community centres are built and children are able to participate in constructive after-achool activities such as choirs and extra study groups. This is a positive way to keep the youth preoccupied and save them from risky activities such as substance abuse and unprotected sex.

With the building and upgrading of clinics and hospitals in rural areas, the infant mortality rate will decrease significantly as proper facilities will be available to care for and nurture new-Born's. Young women will also have the opportunity to receive free and efficient birth control that will ensure that women only have babies when they want to and can afford to.

Lastly, the building and renovating of schools will result in more children being able to attend school ( children not discourages to attend school by the long distances they would have to walk) and excel. Computers, libraries and science labs will assist the children in understanding their work thus helping them to produce better results. This will open the doors to a better life and a higher standard of living.

Rural Development is a way of eradicating poverty in rural area and it is highly advantageous and beneficial to children and the youth.

Rural Environmental Development is actually dedicated to the youth and the children. this kind of development actually invovles the construcion of proper roads, shopping malls, schools and parks for the children, with an aim of urbanising underprivilledge underdeveloped rural areas. this will bring the employment opportunitiesfor the youth and therefore decreasing the rate of unemployment and porverty.this development will also make the life of the youth better in the case of malls constructions. it will reduce the risks of children obtaining the diseases by bettering the environment for instance replacing gravel with tar roads, in some cases the
children are dedicated to playing with soil and in that way they get to contact with the bacteria present in soil and get infections, gravel is a mixture of soil and stones. this development will also contribute to the increase in literacy of rural youth and children. it is assumed that most of the youth and children drop out from schools because of the poor learning facilities especially in the eastern cape rural schools, children happen to fail to tolerate conditions.

Theory underpinning the project: Basic needs approach (food, drinking water, shelter, clothing, health care, electricity and education)-Reconstruction and Development Programme

Justification: All citizens of South Africa have the right to basic goods and services such as adequate food, drinking water, shelter, clothing, health care, electricity and education. These rights lay a foundation for a life of human dignity and it is the duty of the government to ensure that every person (wether residing in urban or rural areas) receives these. This project is of houses being built in a rural area under the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) which the new government subsequent to the Apartheid government initiated when it took over in 1994. This project does not only provide shelter for the houses, but it has also created jobs for millions of needy South Africans all around the country. Hospitals and clinics were later included in the programme, thus further fulfilling the Basic Needs theory in terms of providing basic goods and services for the people. The standard of living for the workers of the RDP and the recipients of the houses was immediately improved therefore qualifying this programme as a development project.

Rural development in South Africa

RDP Housing development programme
Discription of this project: The Reconstruction and Development Programme was started just after democracy, in 1994, by the ANC. The main aim of this programme was to address the socio-economic problems brought upon by the struggle. Creating employment and fighting poverty were also fundamental goals of this project. It brought water, electricity and housing to the less fortunate in our community. This project was brought to different parts of South Africa, above is the Umlazi Project in Kwa-zulu Natal. The majority, Africans, did not have the oppertunity to buy houses as they were permitted by unjust aparthied law, nor did they have the money to purchase a house. The Reconstrution development programme aimed to cahge this and tried to level the playing fields by providing houses to people who would never dream of having a running tap 5km's from them, forget a roof over their heads. Reason for development: This project serves as a testimony to development in South Africa. It has drastically improved people’s lives for the better, by affording them bear necessities such as water, sanitation and housing. It was a major contributor to our Public Works Programme providing employment to over 240 000 people over 5 years to build roads, install sewage and sanitation facilities. This programme did not just stop at housing it soon started the building of hospitals and clinics in the rural areas. Education also improved and people living in those ares's had witnessed the true fruits of 'our' democracy -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sustainable development

Reason for classification
This picture illustrates the development of the rural area. The development of this area can also be seen as sustainable, because by building a new facilities it prevent any further pollution or erosion of the area. So it is actually protecting the environment and at the same time creating jobs for the local community and threw this their living conditions will improve. This improvement of better living conditions can only benefit the youth of this community, because they to can go to school now and get an education and learn new skills they can use to get a job one day. But then again sustainable development is needed, otherwise there wont be a future for these children, because there wont be any resourses left. Therefore every little component of the development of the rural areas are very important. The main actors of this development depend on the perspectives.

Theory underpinning the project.

Classical Marxism.

Reason of classification.
This image illusrates Rural Environmental Development. This kind of Development deals with bettering facilities to improve living conditons which result to urbanisation, increasing the complexity of societies. This will put an end to people migrating to urban areas in search for superior enironments,in this case industries may be introduced and result to economic growth and stability. This kind of Development will also decrease the rate of overpopulation in Townships in a sense that it will lead to rural areas being urbanised. The state is the main actorin this Development project, it organises resource distribution and use.

Description of the project

The above insert is a picture of a construction site in a rural area, which will assist the community and benefit the people in it.

Why is this development?

This is development, because education is being introduced to improve the lives of the people living within this community. This will help young people to have bettr education by removing them from the streets of crime and violance to a brighter future. This programme will also help give teenagers a better perspective on life buy 'forcing' them to want a better future for themselves and their families.Community members will be supplied with jobs and thus reduce the unemployment rate and there will be a decrease in poverty. This will ultimately result in economic growth within the area and will all together better the lives of members of this society as they will be able to afford to take their children to school and thus giving them a chance to break out of the poverty cycle.
Development in rural areas is essential for our country because it solves some problems which our country is facing:rural-urban migration, urban over population in urban areas. It is good that the country is developing rural areas due to the fact that our country will be organised and better suit people of all class. This is also a good development because it will bring economical equilibrium in the community and job lacking will nolonger be a problem.Rural development is essential for our country and will change our country's economic and world status because there will be less child death and most people will be economically stable meaning majority will be rich and so will the country be.Resources will be brought in to develop the community surrounding the school and that in turn will develop the society as a whole.
As stated in the above paragraphs rural development is very important in the rural areas to help the community, especially the children and the youth of this community. This development might even benefit the tourism in this rural area. If the construction site is finished and it looks good, the tourists from other area wont mind driving threw this rural area and even wont mind stopping. This can create new job opportunities for the local community. This means there living standards will improve. This can also create an opportunity to build new things like schools for the children, where they can learn new skills and benefit the community one day. Not only will this development project benefit the community, it will also benefit the environment, because this building that is being built will prevent any future or any other pollution. Therefore we can say that this development is part of sustainable development. And sustainable development is needed to ensure a future for our children.

What development theory underpins this project?

Post-development theory: Basic needs approach.
The basic needs of the members of the societies are being met in the area. When something as big as this is built in a rural area, services such as electricity, telephone and water are introduced to the area and the locals also get to benefit from it.This is meant to iimprove the standard of life and quality of life for the community at large and the nabougring communities. The focus of this is to directly help the poor.
Another development theory can be sustainable development: This involves the protection of the natural environment combined with the development of the community to improve their living standards. Some approaches will be market-led like the one in the above picture and others will involve pricing nature.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The picture above is a contruction site for a hospital in one of the rural ares in South Africa.

WHY IS THIS DEVELOPMENT
It is development because it is a process that takes place when something is being done to improve the lives of the people who will benefit from it. This contruction is a foundation of what will become a hospital and to add to that, many lives will benefit from it especially people that the hospital is directly built to. The collective use of materials is also the reason why this is a development because without these materials( machines, land, water etc), a development cannot place.

WHAT DEVELOPMENT THEORY UNDERPINS THIS PROJECT
The basic needs theory:
In every town, city, province or county, people have needs that the government is responsibe for. not only the government but also the peolpe themselves. after building this hospital, there are many people in the rural sreas that are qualified as doctors, nurses or caregivers. It will give them a job opportunity in order to improve the lives of the people in the community. where ever there is work, shelter is provided. for example: when people start working, meaning the masses, there are good chances of bread-winners to better themselves and the place they live in. Food will be bought, health care will be in closer reach of the people, transport will be provided as a way for people to make profit, others will build houses with the salaries they receive from working at the hospital(shelter). Mortallity rate will be low and the percentage of people's life expentancy will increase in a positive way. Those are the basuc needs that will be reach and provided for with buiding the hospital.

What development theory underpins underpins this project?
The government is the main role player of this project as it is responsible for funding this project, which will better the lives of the community members in the rural area. This project will benefit children and people of the community, because they will have accesss to education and the community will have members with skills and able to do things things for themselves. The development project is the (Basic Needs Development) since in our country education is needed most. Everyone from urban areas to rural areas need to be educated and have a skill to qualify for a specic job that they can make a living out of.The project falls under micro level because it focuses on improving the education level of the comunity members .The final results of this project is a community that is developed ,and most members employed and each member being able to represent the community due to education and poverty in rural areas will decrease.

Masina N 201048442

what development theory underpins this project?
Post Development Theory.Basic needs aproach. .Here we find that not only does it give a basic need to the community but also the essantial skills on how to mantain this development and keeping it for future generations. through this developmdent jobs will be provided to the members of the community which in turn decreases the circle of poverty. Since the members will be occupied in their work of developing their community , levels of crime reach a low due to the people not having time to do crime but to work. When a development is nade skills are required, therefore education plays a very important role in educating the people on how to do the job. Not only is it a community development but it also develops peop;e into getting more education for themselves.

Why is this theory underpines this project?

this project i think is about developing in rural areas. i think ther are building a hospital. this is very important for people who live in rural areas because some rural areas don't have hospitals or some are very far from them so they have to pay for a taxi to go to the hospitals because it is far from them. this will help people who are sick so that they can get better medication and get hilled. also it will help those who are suffering from hih/aids so that they can get treatment very fast. it will help those people in rural areas who were staying at home that are unemployment. it will make sense to them because they will no longer suffer from getting food because in some other rural areas you find it hard to get a job so that you can earn money to get some food to eat. and also this will make their life to become better. this project is very important for the people in the rural areas because this project is made by the government so that htey can live better

Environment and development theories

The project falls under this development the reason why i say so it is because rural areas the most undeveloped areas. The development theories are more focusing on developing the areas, rural areas lack facilities such as hospitals, schools, liabraries, police stations etc. This becomes a problem because people dont have access so they have to travel a long distance which is not good and others dont have money for transpotation. We all know that when your sick you need treatment so how are you going get treament if there are no facilities around you and this is where environmental development theories must come with solution on developing the rural areas. Lack of employment is the other problem in rural areas people are suffering on poverty and this lead to child labour and patriarchy because children need to support their families and this is a bad thing because they dont enjoy their childhood. South African government need to do something with the problems faced in rural areas.

Why this thoery underpines this theory

The theory of Basic needs approach underpines this project because first of all humans in a country have the right to access basic needs. The government is responsible for providing basic needs and the funding of the whole process so people could live better lives. In the rural areas basic needs are often not delivered as compared to the urban areas maybe due to less funding by the government or by corruption in the government.People in the rural areas live in poverty because the people are not skilled or are not educated to the extent that they can get proper jobs and that will pay them well.Unemployment is the big issue as most children drop out of school to go and work so that they support their famillies.Constrution of hospitals and schools is another way to eradicate poverty in the rural areas and it will also open doors for employment in the community.

How this development will benefit/disadvantage

this development will benefit our youth because they are going to get better hospitals and get better medication. people in the community who were sick will be better because they are building them a better hospitals in the community.and this will benefit them because those who didn't have jobs they are going to have jobs so that they can get better lives for them and for their family. i can maybe say that the disadvantage is that sometimes they can get shortage of medication for all people in the community

Segaetsho K

How this project will benifit/disadvantage children and the youth.

Development in a community always mean more job creations, better services for the community and job creation for the youth. For the small percentage of the youth who are unemployed, this project would mean that the youth will be employed and this will
keep them out fo the streets and away from the negative things. This opportunity might also give the youth who are currently studing nursing the opportunity to do training with the local hospitals. This project will benifit the very ill children because thay would not only walk a short distance to get to the hospital but they will also get better treatment.
And most importantly, it will also be to the benifit of the people because they would not have to travel long distances to get to the hospital because the service and the need of a brand new hospital has been delivered to the community. This would indeed eliviate poverty as new job opportunities have been presented to the community.
it would also eliviate crime as people would not have to steal medication from others.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mofokeng K.F
201004043

WHY IS THIS DEVELOPMENT THEORY?

To develop, means to bring change to something, it means to upgrade spmething. Youth development is a huge development that needs to be considered
in South Africa and the rest of the world. Young people have dreams, goals, carreers and al that never happen because of the lack of support and the funds
to give them the needed start. Young people need to be developed and helped in all arears of their lives, they hold the world and their the future.

WHAT DEVELOPMENT THEORY UNDERPINS THIS PROJECT?

Post-development theory: Basic needs approach
There are basic needs provided in this approach which are needed in developing young people and their situations. It has been rated 55% of people giving birth
in South Africa are women under the age of 18 and they do not have the right funds to help or to provide for their babies, so if the youth are given another chance
to be helped and taken care for they can make something out of themselves and start looking for jobs. Jobs need to be established and provided.

HOW THIS PROJECT WILL BENEFIT/DISADVANTAGE CHILDREN AND THE YOUTH.

This project will benefit the youth in so many ways because the youth will have so many things to do and they will find a purpose in life, by developing these projects
to help the youth will help provide for all the disadvantaged children who have lost their parents and now they have to protect and provide for their siblings. If the
governement helps to provide for these young people, then a lot of issues will be solved, issues such as crime, drug abuse, rape, teenage pregnancy an al. This
project will help bring unity and ambition to the young people again.

The disadvantages of this project is that the government might have problems in being able to fund all these developmental projects, that are going to help
develop the youth. These projects are projects such as love-life, hold hands, together we can, and so on, these projects provide food, blankets, clothes and so on for the
disadvantaged people and they give them free counceling and they also provide activities such as dances, sports, and so on. The only disadvantage we are faced
with might be being able to fund all these projects.

Post-development theory: Basic Needs Approach

HOW WIIL THIS PROJECT BENEFIT/DISADVANTAGE THE CHILDREN AND THE YOUTH.

This project will benefit the youth in the sense that the youth is given a chance to actually establilsh themselves as responsible people who are about to be adults and they accept the
responsibilities that come with adulthood. This project will also provide employment for the youth as most of the youth is supporting their families and they are used as instruments when
their parents invest in them rather than being supported out of love and that they have right to education however if they do not perfom to satisfy their parents they are stopped from going to school
and told to for a job. With them getting jobs better facilities are put into use as the new generation has much better knowledge than our parents, this will lead to children being neglected at home
and growing up in unfavourable environments that will lead them astray and will be considered problems or dangerous to the community.

This project will enhance youth to learn more about various kind of deseases affecting other youth in the community through unprotected sex. As the hosipital is closer, so is the knowledge. Children can be enlightened by the youth around the rural areas, HIV/AIDS is a problem facing youth today, the more we learn about it the better chances of teaching young ones. Youth will gain information through adult, as youth has to pass knowledge to childrens at home. This project will enhance voluteering for HIV/AIDS councelling in those youth who are interested in helping the community. This project shows that mordenisation is growing outward as it is implimented on the rural areas, as children and youth of today are living in mordenised societies.
