    DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
  • Skill development programmes play a significant role in the country. With the correct approach, they can contribute to the stability and wellbeing of people who are unemployed and are financially disadvantaged. The project will focus on identifying communities and individuals who may have resources that are market viable and have the skills to transform those resources to goods that can generate income. The participants will market the goods that will be found in communities using creative skills and resources that they have to their exposure i.e. Academic knowledge, marketing. The above picture of a man carving an object is one example of what the project will focus on. In this case, the man might be carving a pot, bowl or ultimately jewellery. It will be the group’s responsibility to then find the market for the carved object which will result in profit gaining for the man. The project will not only focus on market identifying and helping skilled individuals, it will also aid in job creation and skills distribution. It will explore the revenues of getting private companies to sponsor individuals endowed with the skill of craftsmanship in teaching others who are unemployed and have interest in their crafts. This type of development in the skills aspect can be also regarded as indigenous knowledge of people in rural areas as way of promoting their natural skills and knowledge which they sometimes use to make a living. Therefore in South Africa the government has decided to include the craftsmanship skills development as part of the skills development framework program and promote it as one of the small medium micro enterprises(SMMES) so that economic growth can be accelerated in the lower category of people. Multiplier effect can be used in craftsmanship by investments done by the government and private organisations. Jobs will be created through funding initiatives for people who want to start their own businesses. Some poor countries can use the Breton Woods institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank to meet their needs by using their own skills.
  • Why and how is the project developmental?
  • The project is developmental in that its success will yield an increase in an individual’s or community member’s earnings to support his/her family. In this instance, the community will be reduced of the number of people who are without occupation. By teaching others the skills of craftsmanship, ultimately there will be a community of skilled individuals ready for employment and who have the skills necessary to provide necessities for themselves and their families. This would enable all those involved to improve their lives by improving their standard of living. In a nutshell, the number of people unemployed and dependant on the government would be reduced. Recognition of participating communities and individuals may result in improved standard of living. Poverty rate will be reduced. Should the project identify individuals equipped with the necessary skills of leadership and other craftsmanship, it would lead to teaching (skill education) taking place. With education, empowerment and creative skills can be transmitted from one individual to another. The type of education will be interactive and will assist in making participants aware; conscious of how they can resolve the social problems they are faced with i.e. Poverty. In that way skilled people can also turn their skills into practice by getting into the economic field and opening business like carpentry and the more skills people have is the more they are recognized by the good job that they do. With only the skill that one has it can take one to places abroad. When a business expands and generates income more opportunities and jobs will be created for individuals, and it will reduce unemployment which at some instances is the cause of crime. Though the environmental sustainability is not ensured by craftsman in great lengths, it provides employment for people with craftsman skills. They can meet their basic needs as well as provide basic needs such as shelters by building bungalows and furniture that will generate income to provide food and clothes. It has also increased urbanization in most parts of the country because nowadays people live in wood houses rather than mud houses especially in the first world countries (California, USA).
  • The theory under focus in this project: The grassroots development theory
  • Justification: The grassroots development theory focuses on basic community development on the improvement of the quality of people. The theory encourages the running of projects by ordinary people and not big companies that have vested interests in the successes of those projects. Companies that participate in grassroots developments projects are well known as NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organizations). This project supports the developmental aspect of learning through the implementation, which is an important aspect of differentiating other theories from the grassroots theory. The project’s success combats poverty, social exclusion and societal problems. Another aspect that is unique for Grassroots development and found in this project is that of allowing diverse participation from or amongst people the project is designed to aid so that they feel they are part of the project instead of spectators. Such projects within a developing areas help with unemployment which leads to the reduction of crime. In the context of youth it helps them to be more focused in bettering their lives and making something out of themselves instead of engaging in endangering activities as they enhance their knowledge through implementation. Craftsmanship identifies and embraces culture on a global scale, because their work is mostly showed to tourists from all over the global village.
  • HOW THIS PROJECT IMPACTS YOUTH AND CHILDREN The project mainly focus on the skills development and entrepreneurial aspects development related to adults, but the youth and children also benefit from it
  • Advantages
  • • The project as mentioned will benefit the community through giving the participants recognition for their talents. The youth (14-35 years) participating will be employed and from the production and sales of their crafted objects will earn money. This will lower the unemployment rate and help alleviate the impoverished households they may be coming from.
  • • The growth of the project will put interest in other youths who will be interested. Educating the others who will not be skilled will be necessary. It will encourage for the construction of the educational facility and younger children who will not be able to attended formal schooling will attend classes of craftsmanship out of interest. • The community through these initiations will come together and be united. Those involved will be taught not only craftsmanship but also on the role they will be playing as role models to society, especially young children. The children will acquire positive role models.
  • • As time goes, the project will attract NGO’s that will help in the growth of the project as well as the community. As a result, those children whose parents will have not been able to send them to pre-schools will be sent to pre-schools hopefully funded by the NGO’s.
  • · Craftsmanship brings development to a community because it gives the community the ability to bring enrichment and wealth into the community.
  • · Business opportunities increase for those who sell wood to craftsman. It also benefits the school kids by manufacturing paper. Children can learn or develop a skill at a younger age especially those in poor and underdeveloped countries.
  • Disadvantages
  • In attempting to create opportunities for the youth that is skilled with any form of craftsmanship, those not skilled might feel discriminated against when they do not succeed through the educating of the project.
  • Success by few might yield a social gap between those who are successful and those who fail to succeed.
  • Ultimately, resources will be short of supply and the community will have to find other ways to combat poverty and unemployment. The sustainability of the project is not really clear to me.
  • Young children (0-14 years) are not really catered by the project.
  • The education that will be offered will only benefit the youth of over 16-years immediately than those younger than 16-years because the law in the country does not permit children below that age to be recognised as workers.
  • Failure to sustain the environment will affect the youth and children (future generations) in that the environment will have been scared by the generation that will have passed before them.
  • KHANYI N.S 201147181 Benefits and disadvantages of craftsmen skills on children and youth. Craftsmen can benefits the youth and children in different ways, for youth can benefits from craftsman because is the thing that you born with most of the times, if you have skills for create something you just create (produce) and sale it, in order for to generate income. But also you have to earn to empower yourself and become a professional. Other thing on this craftsman it benefits the children because parents if they have skills to produce, you can produce and sale the product and get money to support your children’s as we know that children needs money to go to school, and also need money to get to access to health life . On the other hand this type of benefit can be used to improve the standard of living of disadvantaged communities and their crafts can be allocated a market where they will expose and promote their merchandise, as many South Africans use the strategy of selling their product to other countries. Children and youth they also learn to independent with this craftsman. Disadvantages of craftsmanship to children and youth The disadvantage of this craftsman is that many youth they just drop out of school and continue with making craft. And sometimes it is difficult to even sale that craft because of high competition of craftsman because all unemployment people they dependent on craft, to generate money. So it may be difficult for children and youth to get money if they using craft to get money is the big challenge for them.
  • TO CONCLUDE
  • The craftsmanship will have positive impact more than it will have negative impact. The community that the project will run from will improve in more ways than one. Employment will be created to fight against poverty; crime rate will decrease and the community will unite. As NGOs will develop interest in what will be taking place, the community will get recognition. The youth of the community will not be left out as they will be the instruments of drive behind the project. Children will not have to work if adults within the family will be working. The growth of the project will yield success to in many ways as it will not only incorporate the use of modern skills and entities but will enable gifted community members to express their talent in art and other forms of craftsmanship. Even though the young will not benefit immediately, in time they too will realise the positive impact the project has in their upbringing. The project will be safe to work in and will not exploit and allow children labour to take place. Children instead will be encouraged to focus on education and those who will be taking part in the project will be doing so only to gain experience with regards to future orientated interests they might have.
