The BB Myataza Secondary School ''FEEDING SCHEME PROJECT "
Description of the BB Myataza feeding scheme project:The BB Myataza Feeding Scheme was founded a few years ago when the educators at the school noticed that a large number of children in their classes had trouble concentrating, they were tired all the time, had incomplete uniform and even attendance of students was very poor. As education is important teachers started to help learners of the BB Myataza Secondary by having a feeding scheme at school for those children or learners who are at a real disadvantage. This program focuses more on the children's health, performance and attendance in school and making sure that children consider school as their second home. The existence of the feeding scheme is because of the effort put in by teachers and parents. The feeding scheme is meant to develop the nutritional needs of the children resullting in the cognitive development of the children.
Why this is development? It was clear that these learners came from poor backgrounds but were willing to learn. They then decided to implement a feeding scheme that would proceed during break time. From the teacher's own pockets, they contributed money to buy ingredients like bread, soup, beans and so on. It is development because the teachers are the ones that contribute money to help the learners who are disadvantage,in terms of poor backgrounds, these learners are helped by the feeding scheme which is possible because of the teachers contribution made out of their very own pockets. The problem with this was the maintenance of this project. With that in mind they then approached the Department of Education to help with necessary aid. Private sponsors were also approached and the project then bounced back.
This is considered development also because the feeding scheme has in some way or another contributed to the development of the children. If the children didn't have food to eat then they wouldn't be able to concentrate meaning a very low attention span in class because of hunger or malnutrition thus making this a development project because it is improving the lives of the children and it also increase the pass rate at school because children are able to concentrate in class, they(children) do not have worry about what to eat at school anymore and they are able to do their school work willingly, also it is acting as a way of bringing more children to school in that they are some children that are rebellious and do not want to learn therefore if they know that they will atleast get something at the end of the day they will be motivated to come to school. Moreover feeding schemes are development because it pursues the improvement of childrens minds thus setting a new future at hand within reach and possibilty.
Which development theory underpins this project? There is no single development theory underpinning this development of feeding schemes. The role players in this development project is the society(community) and therefore it is the Grassroots development theory as it is dealing with disadvantaged children in the particular school. The people in the community and the learners are the centre of the intervention as they are supporting the project. The development theory of this development project deals with the basic needs approach because food and water are essential to the children's lives(they cannot live without them),the human development approach can also be taken into consideration because the learners develop in terms of education and this project helps them to concentrate better and as a result they perform well. The level of which this project is happening is at micro-level because it is local participation.
